In her final minutes, multiple drivers saw her flagging down cars on a road at the edge of campus. Not one of them called police. What followed was one of the largest investigations Gresham, Oregon had ever seen: composite sketches, hypnotized witnesses, an FBI consultation, hundreds of interviews, and a community that transformed itself in real time — security upgrades on the college campus, building an entire neighborhood watch program from scratch, and refusing to let Barbara become, in her own mother's words, "just a statistic."
