No Smoke Without Hellfire Part 2
from No Smoke Without Hellfire · host Eamonn McLoughlin
Documentary about Dorcas Kelly aka Darkey Kelly who was burnt at the stake in Dublin in 1761 and may have been the first serial killer to operate in a metropolis. 5 bodies of murdered gentlemen were found in the vaults of her brothel (in the heart of Dublin city) after she was found guilty of having killed John Dowling, a shoe-maker. Prostitutes from her area took the body from the gallows, broke open a brothel in Copper Alley - where her brothel once stood - and waked her 'amidst the riot and excess of numbers'. 13 ladies of the night were arrested and sent to Newgate. The old story told of how she got involved with Simon Luttrell of the notorious Dublin Hellfire Club and tried to blackmail him into keeping the identity of their child a secret, but was found guilty of having killed the baby in a witchcraft ritual and was burnt alive at the stake in front of a jeering crowd on Baggot street, which was known as Gallows Road. The documentary delves into the devilish activities of the hellfire club and goes into the gorey details of the crimes perpetrated against members of the serving class by these cruel and sadistic over-privileged members of the landed gentry. The documentary also illustrates just how tough life was like back then for the underprivileged inhabitants of the second city of the British empire.
