No, Trump Can't Abolish the DOE with an Executive Order

from Yo, Miss! Podcast · host Sari Beth Rosenberg

So much breaking news these days, I apologize for all the posts in your inbox from me. #SariNotSorry 😎✌🏼❤️‍🔥 But as you probably already saw, President Trump just signed an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to initiate steps toward dismantling the Department of Education, aiming to shift control of school policy to the states. However, fully abolishing the department necessitates congressional approval, which is currently lacking. Anyone with a BASIC AF civics education already knows this. However, as of March 2025, the Trump administration has implemented significant budgetary reductions within the U.S. Department of Education (DOE):* Workforce Reduction: The DOE's workforce has been reduced by approximately 50%, equating to around 2,200 positions. This reduction was achieved through a combination of voluntary resignations and terminations. Business Insider* Program Funding Cuts: The administration has canceled 169 contracts totaling $881 million, primarily affecting the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the research division of the DOE. This action has led to the cessation of numerous research projects and educational programs.* Impact on Services: These budgetary measures have raised concerns about the DOE's capacity to manage federal student loans, enforce civil rights laws in educational settings, and support programs for low-income and special needs students. So, once again, it's important to note that while these internal budget cuts are substantial. However, any formal move to abolish the Department of Education would require congressional approval. Thanks for reading Yo, Miss! ! This post is public so feel free to share it.
