Elder My City, with Tim Schmoyer Tim Schmoyer Paul tells Timothy that Biblical eldership is a noble task (1 Tim 3:1), so I want to aspire towards it.Like Boaz gathering city elders (Ruth 4:2) or the Proverbs 31:23 husband at the city gates, elders govern, serve, teach, and lead. It requires intentional growth in leadership, faith, marriage, parenting, business, and asset management. This training starts as a father in our home (1 Tim 3:4), qualifies us to be an elder in our city (1 Tim 3:5), and prepares us to rule with God in His Kingdom one day (Luke 19:11-27).Join me as I explore what it means to aspire to this noble task today. read.timschmoyer.com 2 Maccabees by Douay-Rheims Version (DRV) Loyal Books The Book of 2 Machabees (more commonly rendered 2 Maccabees) is an abridgement of another work, now lost, which describes the events surrounding the defeat of Antiochus IV Epiphanes and the rededication of the Jewish temple in the 2nd Century BCE. It's canonicity (status as Holy Writ) was established later in the Christian era, and hence forms part of the deuterocanon (2nd canon). It is excluded from the Jewish bibles as well as modern Protestant bibles. The Church of England, in 1571, affirmed that 2 Machabees, as well as several other books excluded from the Protestant canon, "the Church doth read for example of life and instruction of manners; but yet doth it not apply them to establish any doctrine" (The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, Article VI).The defeat of Antiochus IV Epiphanes is celebrated annually during the Festival of Hannukah, which is referred to prophetically in the Jewish Scriptures (Daniel 8, 11) and explicitly in the Christian Scriptures (John 10:22). The Vicar of Wakefield (version 2) Oliver Goldsmith First published in 1766, the loveable and innocent Dr Primrose and his family have given pleasure to all that have read it.The story opens with the vicar losing his fortune and moving to another parish. What follows is a tale of love, deceit, betrayal, humour and a hidden hero…..It was one of Charles Dickens favourite books and a source of inspiration to him. No further recommendation is needed. Enjoy. (Summary by Tadhg) Bab Ballads (version 2) by W. S. Gilbert Loyal Books The Bab Ballads are a collection of light verse by W. S. Gilbert, illustrated with his own comic drawings. Gilbert wrote the Ballads before he became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. In writing the Bab Ballads, Gilbert developed his unique "topsy-turvy" style, where the humor was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences, however absurd. The Ballads also reveal Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humor. They became famous on their own, as well as being a source for plot elements, characters and songs that Gilbert would recycle in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The Bab Ballads take their name from Gilbert's childhood nickname, and he later began to sign his illustrations "Bab".Nothing else quite like the Ballads has ever been produced in the English language. They contain both satire and nonsense, as well as a great deal of utter absurdity. The Ballads were read aloud at private dinner-parties, public banque
