from The North Carolina Weather Podcast
Good evening! I'm Aaron Jolly. And this is the North Carolina Weather Podcast for Sunday, February 22nd. Folks, our state is running two completely different weather movies tonight. The mountains are getting hammered with snow. The coast is flooding. And the Triangle? Caught somewhere in between with sideways wind. Let's start up in the high country. Winter Storm Warnings cover Avery and Mitchell Counties through Monday night. Beech Mountain and Grandfather Mountain could see 8 to 12 inches of snow by 9 AM tomorrow. Wind gusts hit 60 miles an hour up there. Tonight's lows drop to 18 degrees, but wind chills? Near zero. That's frostbite territory. If you're anywhere above 3,500 feet, stay put. Pack blankets and a flashlight if you absolutely must drive. Now swing east to the coast. Coastal Flood Advisories are up from Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke. One to two feet of saltwater flooding threatens low lying areas around Manteo and Pamlico Sound. Gusts reach 50 miles an hour, enough to snap limbs and topple weak trees. Move your car off flood prone streets by 7 PM tonight. The Triangle gets its own little surprise. A brief snow and rain mix north of Durham this evening. Maybe a dusting on your windshield in Granville County. Nothing sticks to roads. The real pest is wind, gusting to 35 miles an hour through sunset at 17 degrees:04 PM. Tomorrow's high only reaches 47 degrees. That's 17 degrees colder than today. Watch for black ice on bridges by 6 AM Monday. Here's where it gets interesting. This deep freeze has an expiration date. Tuesday stays chilly and calm. Then Wednesday, highs rocket to the low 60s statewide. Near record warmth for late February. Thursday a soaking rain moves through. And by Friday into the weekend you're looking at sunny skies and mid 60s again. Charge your phone tonight. You'll want weather alerts if those gusts get wild. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. Take care!
