Welcome to North Tonawanda, NY, the "Home of the Carousel!" At one time, five carousel manufacturers operated in the town, and it is currently home to the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum. Located on the Erie Canal, Tonawanda was also known as "Lumber City", when it served as a lumber transportation and forwarding center. Tonawanda is home to the historic Riviera Theatre and the Dick Block, which is a very unfortunately named office building. The town was also home to Gladys Parker, the creator of the long-running comic strip Mopsy. Parker was one of the few female comics working between the 1930s and the 1950s. There are a number of other minor celebrities who have ties to the town according to wikipedia.
