North Words: Let's Go Camping

On the March edition of North Words: Prepare for camping season across the North Country with a conversation about the history of camping, viewed through the evolution of camping gear. Martin Hogue lives in Syracuse and is a professor of landscape architecture at Cornell. His recent book, “Making Camp: A Visual History of Camping’s Most Essential Items & Activities,” offers a unique look at things we might take for granted – like the design of campgrounds, tents, and even the Nalgene bottle. Then, meet Tim Brookes, founder of the Endangered Alphabets project. His effort seeks to save threatened writing systems around the world, and his new book, “Writing Beyond Writing,” describes the personal journey that led him to his life’s work.
