Northern California: The 50-Year Fight to Save the Coastal Redwoods
from Hometown History · host Shane Waters
Eureka, California. One of my favorite movies as a kid was The Lorax, the original with this song. Under the trees, happy-deppy barbaloots. Under the trees, in our barbaloot suits. Under the trees, eating traculate fruits. Boldly succulent, deliciously deliciously sweetly succulent, fluous traculate fruits. When I first saw The Lorax, I had some sense that it was about protecting the environment, but it's more than a cartoon. It's a thinly-veiled environment manifesto. WHY THIS MATTERS The story of Eureka is a reminder that the events that shaped America didn't always happen in the biggest cities. What unfolded here left marks on the community that are still visible today. The full story is more complicated, and more human, than the version most people know.
