Not Addicted to Much Wine

from 1 Timothy · host Brett Mahlen

Among the qualifications for elders and deacons in 1 Timothy 3 is that they not be addicted to much wine, yet Paul tells Timothy to use a little wine for his stomach. Scripture condemns drunkenness but does not forbid wine, and to add rules God has not given, as the Pharisees did, is dangerous. Ephesians 5 sets drunkenness against being filled with the Spirit, which means being taken up by God's word and by Christ's love, which is better than wine.
