Not Just Effort

from Deep in the Word - Verse by Verse Bible Study · host Kent A. Jacob

Pastor Kent opens with radical honesty — acknowledging that after a full week of devotional content, some people arrive at Friday genuinely tired, without the faith or words to grasp what's been taught. Rather than pushing harder, he does the opposite: he lifts the weight entirely. He zeroes in on the final phrase of Romans 15:13 — "by the power of the Holy Spirit" — and argues that this single clause reframes everything that came before it. The joy, peace, and abounding hope Paul prays for are not self-generated. They are Spirit-supplied. Using the Greek word dunamis — the same root as dynamite, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead — Kent makes the case that resurrection power is not a distant force but a resident one, already dwelling inside every believer. The problem, he says, is that many have been exhausting themselves trying to manufacture hope through effort and willpower, and then condemning themselves when they run out of steam. But the Spirit is not a supplement to human effort — He is the source. Just as fruit is not achieved by straining but by abiding in the vine, hope is not produced by trying harder but by staying close to the One who produces it. The week's entire arc — finding the right source, being filled, opening your hands, raising your expectation — is crowned by this final revelation: the energy to do all of it was never yours to generate. It always belonged to God. The closing invitation is simply this — let go, remain in His presence, and let the dunamis do what effort never could.
