SPAAT provides support programs to assist student-athletes in successfully transitioning to college and various careers. Today's young adults encounter more difficulties than previous generations, often with less direction and support than their parents. As stated on SPAAT's website, the average student-to-counselor ratio in California is 1:760. In addition, education budget cuts, overcrowded schools, and an overall lack of awareness of just how difficult the transition from high school to adulthood is in today's world are leaving many students behind when they graduate. This is especially challenging for student-athletes who may solely focus on playing sports in college but need additional support due to their athletic commitments. SPAAT is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to transform the youth's lives and create a positive shift in their community. Their programs create an ongoing college culture, helping their students receive millions of dollars in academic and athletic scholarships.
