Nov. 12th Coalition March & Rally Cassette Side One

On 12 November 1983, at least 20,000 people gathered near the White House to protest U.S. intervention in Central America and the Carribean. The United States had recently invaded Grenada. Within three years, the Reagan administration would be embroiled in the Iran-Contra Affair.Several satellite demonstrations occurred around the country, including in Los Angeles, where this broadcast originated. Marchers are interviewed as they arrive in MacArthur Park along Wilshire Blvd. Organizers of the event, a Catholic priest, and a professor of nuclear physics speak to the audience. A local reggae band, Boss Skank, performs. Excerpts from Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra’s 1983 LP The Ballad Of The Fallen are dubbed over the proceedings, from the studio of L.A. radio station KPFK-FM.This is side one of a cassette found in my father’s collection.
