Richard Lin Without Beginning Without End Series: Infinite Mountains Oil on canvas Dimensions variable 1984 [The script of this episode] Have you ever thought about how an artwork can be both two-dimensional and three-dimensional at the same time? This work consists of six canvases arranged in order from smallest to largest on the wall. The canvases come in shades of white, red, gray, and green. From the front, they appear as a flat composition, much like a traditional painting. But take a step to the side and look again—you’ll notice that the canvases vary in thickness. As your perspective shifts, a layered, three-dimensional effect emerges, resembling distant mountain ranges stacked upon one another. This visual experience directly connects to the title Infinite Layers of Distant Green, inspired by Richard Lin’s time living in Xindian’s Garden City. The title Without Beginning, Without End also echoes Lin’s philosophy: “If it is both a starting point and an ending point, then there is no distinction between the two.” Richard Lin was known for his ability to create visual rhythms and spatial transformations with minimal elements. After returning to Taiwan from Europe in 1982, he transitioned from painting to three-dimensional sculptures and installation art, expanding his exploration of space. Originally exhibited in his 1984 solo show, this work remained unseen for decades until briefly exhibited in Taichung in 2021.
