NTFS#146 – Are There Really Profits to be Made From Hosting Sporting Events? Also a Look Back at the FIFA World Cup, and a Question for State Politicians.

from Not The Footy Show

How many of you have questioned the figures spouted by politicians about the economic impact of an event and even the creation of a sporting venue will generate? Is there a formula to predict such figures? Our guest on this show is a man who has worked in sports for over 47 years and has lectured on many aspects of sport at the US Sports University – formerly the United States Sports Academy – including the area of Sports Finance. T.J. Rosandich looks at this aspect of sport and how in fact many major events end up costing money rather than making money. We are sure that you will find what he has to say extremely interesting. John has us turn our attention to the recent FIFA World Cup that has just concluded, and Ashley looks briefly at the change in goalkeeper techniques and teh number if Africans gracing the tournament playing for other nations. John then raises the issue of the conspiracy theories that ran throughout the tournament and the “hatred of the VAR.” After our conversation with TJ, John and Ashley discuss some of the issues raised and how Western Australian Tourism figures leaked were claiming that for every dollar spent on bringing events, including sporting events to the state, these events would return $2.80. Hopefully after listening to this interview someone asks the Government to show how they came to that figure.
