Tras un movimiento para mantener y prolongar sus 17 centrales nucleares en 2010, en el año 2011 Alemania, presionada social y políticamente tras el desastre de Fukushima, decidió apresurarse a cerrarlas en el plazo de una década. A finales de 2022 deberían de cerrar las 3 que quedan en funcionamiento; pero entre medias, muchas cosas han pasado, y la exposición al gas ruso ha dejado a Alemania al borde del abismo, y por extensión, una posible quiebra parcial de su economía podría arrastrar el resto de la unión europea.
