Nuclear weapons, gendered violence & the feminist Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

As part of 3CR’s 16 Days of Action against Gender-Based Violence we're joined by Dimity Hawkins and Marianne Hanson to discuss nuclear weapons, gender and the feminist ‘Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons’ that was introduced by the UN in 2017 and that will finally see nuclear weapons made illegal under international law on 22 January 2021.Marianne Hanson who has been teaching at Uni QLD for over 25 years in the area of International Politics. She has been specialising in Weapons control and is also a board member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.Dimity Hawkins is completing her PHD at Swinburne University and her project focuses on the response of Fiji to nuclear testing around the time of independence and decolonisation. She is one of the co-founders of the International Campain to Abolish Nuclear Weapons - the grassroots movement that began here in Melbourne and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for their work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.
