Understanding Numbers 1 – A Simple Explanation What is Numbers 1 about? Numbers 1 is the first chapter of the book of Numbers in the Bible. It tells the story of how God instructed Moses to take a census (a count) of the Israelites while they were in the wilderness. This happened after they had escaped from Egypt and were preparing to enter the land God had promised them. Key Points from Numbers 1: 1.God Commands a Census •God tells Moses to count all the men who are 20 years old or older and able to fight in the army. •The counting is done by tribes, which were named after the 12 sons of Jacob (Israel). 2.The Twelve Tribes are Counted •Each tribe had a leader who helped with the counting. •The tribes were: Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Ephraim, Manasseh, Benjamin, Dan, Asher, Gad, and Naphtali. •The total number of fighting men counted was 603,550. 3.The Levites Were Not Counted •The tribe of Levi was not included in the census because God gave them a special job—to take care of the Tabernacle (a holy tent where God’s presence was). •Instead of fighting in the army, the Levites were responsible for the worship and service of God.
