Its well over a year since they have left Egypt. Moses is going to name the twelve spies from the twelve tribes.We should keep in mind that all of these people had been born into slavery and served thier entire lives as slaves. They have now been free just over one year, having come out of Egypt and seen what God did in great majestic power. They were also all leaders, so very influential.The problem for them was Nephilim. In Genesis 6 it also talks of Nephilim, and all sorts of wild theories have abounded about this “super race” etc. It’s not magical, these were just bigger people, or giants.In African today in the nation of Uganda and nearby nations such as Rwanda there are tribes with taller people like the Watusi (the Tutsi) living near tribes with smaller people such as the Pygmy. All of this is just natural variation in humanity, and the Nephilim were big people.Their report was one of pessimism. After having seen what God did to the Egyptians, one wonders why more of the spies didn’t feel they could enter the promised land.The problem here, and also the problem of grumbling and complaining in the earlier chapters, is that their eyes were on themselves. Eyes should be on the Lord.
