They question Moses and Aaron and express frustration about their hardships in the wilderness.Moses and Aaron seek the Lord, and God instructs Moses to speak to the rock to bring forth water. Instead, Moses strikes the rock twice in anger. Though water flows and the people are provided for, Moses’ action is considered disobedience because he did not honor God as holy before the people. As a result, God tells Moses and Aaron that they will not lead Israel into the Promised Land. The place is called Meribah, meaning quarreling, reflecting both the people’s complaint and Moses’ failure to uphold God’s holiness.Israel then requests passage through Edom, but the king refuses, forcing them to take a longer route. This shows that not every obstacle is removed, even when peace is sought. The chapter concludes with the death of Aaron on Mount Hor.
