Numbers 31: A Holy God
from 1189 Adventure · host LifeWay Church
Numbers 31 is one of the Bible's most difficult chapters. It records Israel carrying out God's judgment against the Midianites after they had led Israel into idolatry and sexual immorality in earlier chapters (especially Numbers 25). The chapter includes warfare, judgment, the distribution of plunder, and laws about purification after battle. For many readers today, the violence in this chapter raises hard questions. Rather than offering easy answers, it invites us to wrestle with God's justice, humanity's sin, and the seriousness with which Scripture treats evil. As Christians, we also read it in light of Jesus, who reveals God's heart most fully and calls His followers to love their enemies while trusting God—not us—with ultimate judgment. Numbers 31 reminds us that the Bible doesn't hide the difficult parts of history, but calls us to approach them with humility, faith, and a desire to understand God's character more deeply.
