When the cloud lifts, the Israelites move forward; when it remains, they stay in place. This divine leading occurs whether the cloud stays for a long or short period. This passage teaches absolute dependence on God’s direction. The Israelites move only at God’s command, reinforcing their trust in Him. The cloud by day and fire by night symbolizes God’s protection, presence, and leadership.
