Nurturing Precocious Talent

from Leader Manager Coach Podcast

This week Rob shares some key learnings that he was fortunate to discover at a recent conference. The tips are from a football coaching niche but can be applied to anything. Success principles are applicable to all aspects of success and life.KEY TAKEAWAYS Rob was invited to the third AFC youth conference where he learnt several key things that he wants to share.1 – Precocious talent matures very slowly, if at all2 – Competition drives everything, without competition we will not achieve what is possible.3 – We have to think longer term, about development and performance not just winning and results.4 – It's not just the 11 on the pitch, it's the teams behind the teams.5 – Relationships are key. You cannot build a successful team unless there is focus on the relationships.6- Focus on systemisation. It's important that when decisions are made that the correct systems are in place so that people can do the doing and the decision makers can focus on the things they are supposed to.7 – To be successful you need the raw material, you need a grassroots programme in place. 8 – There are three key stages to get people to the elite level of football. 9- Talent requires talent, to coach others you gave to be talented and willing to work to grow and develop yourself to be the best individual and coach you can be.10- You have to understand what you need to know other than the technical aspects of the game. You need to know how to find and nurture talent and how to effectively coach young people and how to be patient.11– Whenever whatever comes to fruition you have to learn to let go. These people do not belong to you or anyone else, you are just their as part of their journey.12 -  Learning how people learn. If we don't engage with how their brains work then we will not get the maximum amount of talent and growth.13 - The theory of late development – be very aware of making judgements too early. BEST MOMENTS“Asia is coming, it's got drive, it has hunger and desire and it has experts and it has young populations, Asia is coming”“Sometimes it just takes one thing that is a final thing in the jigsaw on your journey that makes all the difference”“Put in great foundations that allow that 90 minutes on the grass…all the administration, all the finance, all the work, all the science and all the training that goes behind it is absolutely fundamental”“You have to get buy in from the people with the power”“If you don't empathise with where they are then you will not get the best out of them” VALUABLE RESOURCESLeader Manager Coach PodcastABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background.
