All of his research, teaching, and consulting projects seek to understand how communication works to promote or hinder democracy. Don is the author of Improv for Democracy and Leadership Standpoints. He is the co-author of Innovation Soup: A Recipe for Organizational Success.Today, Don shares how he developed a communication perspective across diverse work experiences managing political campaigns, teaching communication, performing improvisational comedy, and more. Don and Abbie discuss improv and “yes, and” as a way to understand creating social worlds in collaboration; moving our thinking of communication away from a transmission model (send and receive) to a constitutive view (relate and create); and moving beyond our default ways of being using adaptive leadership theory. Don explains his version of what a better social world could be.
