OC-OA-0005 - OutCaster Jamie talks about their short haircut and how it challenged a child's conception of gender norms

from OutCasting

Jamie, an OutCasting youth participant for three years, is working this summer as a music instructor at a day camp for children. (Jamie prefers they/them pronouns.) During the summer, Jamie got an upcut -- a haircut a bit longer on top and with buzzed sides and back. One day, an eight-year-old girl said something insulting to Jamie about their upcut. On this edition of OutCasting OffAir, Jamie explores the gender norms that seem to have prompted the comment and talks about how they use these opportunities to talk about hair and gender norms with other children.
