What this episode covers
A meditation on the world-building magic of Octavia E. Butler. Octavia E Butler: prophet, world-builder, door-opener, progenitor of the magic that is Afrofuturism. Novelist. Writer of books that make portals, what adrienne marie brown calls visionary fiction. Writing that visions the future, that opens it with new possibility, or that offers a terrifying warning and so pushes the mind to face dark truths and oppose the vision of the possible they present. Resist horror-futures in the present by having them in our sights. Someone who thought through the way witch hunts happen, and what makes someone different enough to be both powerful, and a target.
