October 5th in Elvis History

from Today in Elvis History · host Evin 'Elvis' Breen-Presley

It's October fifth, and on this day in 1955, Elvis Presley performed at the City Auditorium in Greenville, Texas, as part of the Louisiana Hayride tour. Sponsored by the Optimist Club, the show was one of many small-venue stops that helped Elvis build a loyal regional fan base and fine-tune the electrifying stage presence that would soon catapult him to national stardom. And in 1958, while stationed in Germany, Elvis met 16-year-old typist Margit Buergin during a visit with his family at their hotel. She asked for a photo—and that simple request sparked a romantic relationship that would continue throughout his early months overseas.
