Oh, Nuts! Twisted Tales of Testicle Trauma and Torsion With Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee

"Is this really a thing," this listener asks? In short, no. Dr. Mistry explains that what this listener actually experienced was the twisting and discoloration of his appendix epiploica, a small skin tag-like remnant of the female reproductive tract. Every man has this "leftover" from the point in their fetal development prior to sexual differentiation. Following injuries to the testicles, this tiny, unnecessary organ can appear to be a small bruise on the top of the testicle but in fact what's called a torsed appendix. Trauma to the testicles can have serious implications, depending on the patients age and the nature of the trauma. While very young boys are unlikely to suffer compromised infertility due to ruptured testicles, older boys and young men can experience an immune reaction to the breakdown of the blood-testis barrier which may cause infertility later in life.  Depending on the extent of the injury, surgical repairs may need to be made to a ruptured testicle. Testicles can also become twisted, which causes serious pain and constitutes a medical emergency.
