Ohio's Haitian community after the end of TPS

The United Supreme Court ruled on June 25 that the Trump administration was allowed to end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of more than 300,000 Haitians in the United States.Recently, the work permits for Haitians with TPS were extended to July 24, while lower courts fully implement the Supreme Court ruling.There are between 10,000 and 15,000 Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, which is a significant portion of the city’s overall population of about 60,000.The Haitian Community Network in Columbus estimates there are about 30,000 Haitians in Columbus with about 18,000 of them here on TPS.We will discuss what the impending July 24 date means for Haitians in Springfield and in Columbus and their employers.Guests:Jessica Orozco, senior associate reporter, Springfield News-SunEmily Brown, assistant clinical professor of law/director of the Immigration Clinic at Ohio State UniversityYola Lamarre, external relations coordinator, The Haitian Community Network(photo: Luis Andres Henao / AP)
