Oilers Sign Formenton Amid Outcry | Calgary News

The Edmonton Oilers’ signing of Alex Formenton—once part of Canada’s 2018 World Junior team and recently acquitted in a sexual assault trial—has ignited fierce backlash from fans and survivor advocates. Superfan Mama Stanley vows to sever ties with the team, while local organizations condemn the move as dismissive of survivors’ trauma. The Oilers defend the decision as the result of a thorough vetting process, but longtime supporters are now rethinking their loyalty, fearing the club’s actions send a dangerous message that justice doesn’t matter in sports.
