Ol’ Bones | A Family’s Bargain with a Monster in the New York Woods

A family leaves its first hunting kill for something in the forest in “Ol’ Bones” by Joe Solmo. In northern New York, a grandfather’s warning has become a rule: offer the creature its share, respect the creek’s markings and leave its territory alone. Carcasses hanging in trees and enormous tracks give the younger generation reasons to obey, even without seeing what accepts the sacrifice. This backwoods monster story follows a bargain passed down as family lore. Curiosity promises a glimpse of the truth—but some neighbors are safer left unseen.
