Olanikee Osi: What’s Wrong With Being Selfish?

from Redefining Wealth with Patrice Washington · host Patrice Washington

If I asked you to define what it means to practice self-care and self-love what would you say? The key to all “practices” is you decide what they mean for you. For example, my definition of self-care could be wildly different from yours and neither of us would be wrong. When I sat down with Vanessa White, known as Olanikee Osi, the CEO and Founder of Goddess Detox Inc., and SelfishBabe, I asked her to define self-care, self-love and what it means to be selfish. I also asked her why she thought so many women struggle with the idea of being selfish and asked her what we could do to change that.  Listen in as Olanikee and I dive into the topic of selfishness and discover new ways you can embrace “being selfish” to enhance your self-care, self-love and overall health and wellness.  This episode is brought to you by the Selfish Babe app, the place women can turn to to learn how to selfishly and authentically love themselves as well as a place to turn to for self-love resources. She’s a self-love manifestor who helps women around the world, including herself, develop ways to love themselves by being more selfish and authentic in their lives. She also believes if you truly want something you can get it – you just have to make it happen. How Do You Define Selfish? As women, many of us struggle too much with the idea of being selfish. But one of the things I believe most is that nothing has meaning except for the meaning we assign it. For example, when people think about the word selfish, they often think of it in terms of lacking consideration for others. This is what you’d find in the dictionary. But I always encourage people to go deeper, and when I thought about what it meant to be selfish, I saw concern for one’s own personal profit or pleasure. “Being selfish is about being honest with yourself and truly loving yourself. Self-love is selfish.” – Olanikee Osi  Olanikee believes too many women struggle with the idea of being selfish because society tells us as women that we need to be taking care of others in order to feel fulfilled. In other words, we’re taught to nurture other people like we would the baby dolls so many of us grew up caring for. Be Unapologetically Selfish Self-love is about more than going to the nail salon or spending an hour in the bath. It’s about your mindset, and it’s about understanding and committing to putting yourself first. For the SelfishBabe app, Olanikee knew she wanted to create something where women could feed their mind and change their mindsets. She wanted to motivate them and give them the push they needed to take action on their ideas.  “Me choosing myself is going to be the best decision for both of us.” – Olanikee Osi  Many of you know my story – how I lost everything in the recession and ended up sleeping on my brother’s couch. But what you don’t know is a couple of years later he needed to borrow money and I said no. My family couldn’t believe it, but I knew what I was being called to do and I knew if let him borrow all the money I’d saved, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I needed to do.  In other words, had I not taken that moment to be selfish and to put myself first, then I would have let myself down. And people may not get it in the moment, but it’s not for them to get. It’s for us to start to stand up and be unapologetically selfish. This Ain’t Ya Mama’s Self Help The SelfishBabe app uses choice language, but what I always tell people is, “You can’t miss the message because you get caught up in the minutia.” For me, I love my Christian music, but I also love my Snoop Dogg – to me, the app is a bit like that. It’s a safe space for young women and it meets them where they are in life and in a way that feels good for them. Olanikee agrees and said she created the app the way she did because personal development doesn’t have to look any one way. She wanted it to feel like your friend was talking to you, and wanted it to be relatable, fun and something that would get you engaged. “The SelfishBabe app is the home-girl who’s going to boost you up and be real with you at the same time.” – Olanikee Osi  SelfishBabes are learning to selfishly love themselves. They get daily affirmations sent to their phone and whether they say them out loud or not, they read them and that plays into the subconscious mind telling them they can do this.
