Old Covenant Salvation

If the Old Covenant is 'only a shadow' of the New Covenant and lacked the ability to provide eternal salvation for its members, how was a person saved in the Old Covenant? In other words, if the Old Covenant terms, membership, laws, sacraments, ceremonies, and sacrifices could not effectually forgive sins, make a person righteous, or provide eternal life, how was an Old Covenant member eternally saved? Was eternal salvation even available during the Old Covenant?
