Old Mortality Volume 1 Chapter 21

In which the young Henry Morton is invited to join the ranks of the Covenanting army, and debates earnestly the principles and conduct of their cause, particularly troubled by the violent origins of the insurrection. Into the midst of divided zeal and differing doctrines, Morton weighs his conscience against the passionate urgings of the commanders, resolved to lend his sword only to a just and honourable endeavour for the freedom of his country.
