Old Mortality Volume 1 Chapter 9
from The Walter Scott Library Hosted by Sir Walter Scott
In which a young prisoner of gentle birth is conveyed under guard to the loyal tower of Tillietudlem, where the hospitable Lady Margaret extends her courtesy to royal soldiers despite the troubled times. The discourse between the rough yet witty Sergeant Bothwell and the steward, amid generous potations and tales of lost honour, reveals the mingling of faded dignity and steadfast allegiance within this sombre Scottish stronghold.
