Old Mortality Volume 2 Chapter 12

In which Henry Morton and his attendant, seeking shelter on a remote moorland, unwittingly intrude upon a stern company of ardent Covenanters engaged in solemn devotions, who suspect Morton of treachery and resolve to punish him. As the dread hour of his execution approaches amid fervent prayers and tense silence, deliverance unexpectedly arrives in the shape of a troop of dragoons, turning a dire fate into a narrow escape.
