Old Mortality Volume 2 Chapter 14
from The Walter Scott Library Hosted by Sir Walter Scott
In which Morton, now a captive yet treated with a strange mixture of severity and courtesy by the inscrutable General Claverhouse, embarks on a journey fraught with grim reflections and uneasy discourse, revealing the complex temperaments and fierce divisions of the land. The chapter closes with a savage and mocking procession of prisoners paraded through Edinburgh’s streets, while Morton and his servant, Cuddie, are summoned to give evidence before the Council under a shadow of uncertainty and dread.
