Old Mortality Volume 2 Chapter 7

In which Morton, attended by his faithful companion Cuddie, receives tidings from the wearied Jenny Dennison concerning the dire straits and mutiny within the beleaguered Castle of Tillietudlem, and sets out to confer with the captive Lord Evandale. There, amidst the melancholy dawn and the clashing passions of men, a parley is struck that ushers a reluctant surrender, while the ladies and loyal soldiers prepare to leave the fortress to the insurgents' keeping.
