This is the original audition recording — the demonstration disc that Groucho and producer John Guedel financed and cut themselves at a CBS studio on September 15, 1947, weeks before the show's official ABC premiere. It captures the very first time the format was tried out: Groucho as a quiz host who cares far more about ribbing his contestants than about the questions, ad-libbing his way through interviews with everyday people and proving that the show's real prize was the laughter.
