Olympian Mohammed Ahmed Reflects on the Intersection of Identity and Sport

from The Shakeout Podcast · host Mohammed Ahmed

This week we speak with one of Canada’s greatest track runners about the intersection of identity and sport. Mohammed Ahmed is a multiple time Olympian, Canadian record holder and national champion.  The Somali-Canadian considers St. Catherines, Ont. his hometown, but has spent the last decade in the United States. In this episode Ahmed recounts his experiences of racial and religious discrimination, as well as his athletic setbacks and successes.  He takes us through his thrilling bronze medal performance at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. And he shares his big goals for the future.STATEMENT FROM THE SHAKEOUT PODCAST:On behalf of The Shakeout Podcast and Canadian Running Magazine, we want to express our collective grief following the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black and Indigenous peoples across North America at the hands of state sanctioned violence. We also recognize that we have failed to adequately and responsibly represent the diversity of our audience, and of the running community at large. We have spent the past weeks exploring ways to remedy this inexcusable problem. We have a renewed commitment to sharing diverse stories from the running world, and using our platforms to amplify melanated and marginalized voices.
