In which an unflattering survey is made of the Tahitians’ social condition, revealing the blight of idleness and foreign maladies that have eroded their industriousness and numbers, casting a sombre view upon their prospects. Thereafter, attention returns to the company aboard the Julia, where a sudden and peculiar indisposition of the long and taciturn doctor unfolds with some comic and humanising detail.
