Omoo Chapter Chapters 9-10

In which the Julia, carrying a melancholy captive newly renamed Luff, drifts steadily westward under a pale sky, the crew settling into a languid, uncertain routine amid whispers of a hidden cruising ground rich with tame whales and untouched isles. The tale then descends into the cramped, insect-haunted forecastle quarters where the narrator and the genial yet disreputable Doctor Long Ghost forge companionship amid rats, cockroaches, and a game of chess that bewilders all but themselves.
