On a Country Road

Originally Aired: January 4, 1954 Suspense #533, "On a Country Road," stars Frank Lovejoy as David, who takes what seems like an innocent shortcut with his wife Dorothy to avoid heavy traffic and an approaching storm. Their decision proves ill-timed, as radio bulletins warn that Nellie Goller, a dangerous mental patient who brutally murdered several people with a meat cleaver, has escaped and is believed to be in the very area they're driving through. Despite Dorothy's growing anxiety and warnings to stay off lonely roads, David presses forward on the isolated country route through desolate woods near Santa Moritches, where the killer has just claimed two more victims. As the storm intensifies and darkness falls, the couple's situation becomes dire when their car runs out of gas on the deserted road surrounded by dense forest.
