On the Move in Mongolia by Shebana Coehlo

The word “transportive” is thrown around quite a bit in audio and this piece is a prime example of why.  Want to experience sheep herding with women in Mongolia?  Turn up the volume.  Shebana Coehlo’s piece expertly weaves tape, memoir, and occasionally dabbles in sound art to deliver the listener to a remote place with rich stories and landscapes.  With narration that feels like an internal monologue, she reflects on how a documentarian’s life can influence their work, and we’re given a deeper consideration of the Mongolian lives she’s covering.The work was made for Outer Voices, Stephanie Guyer-Stevens multi-media organization focusing on women leaders in remote areas of the globe.  Stories from Outer Voices aired on 200+ radio stations in the US, and the team featured legendary radiomakers including friend-of-Selects, John Biewen (see our show Contested).
