One Rooftop at a Time: Bangladesh's Solar (Home) Systems, Local Environments, and Energy Access

Bangladesh encountered one of the most formidable electrification challenges globally. The interplay of rivers, wetlands, seasonal flooding, and dispersed rural communities rendered the extension of a conventional electrical grid both prohibitively expensive and agonizingly slow. Instead of resigning itself to decades of waiting for transmission lines, the nation embarked on one of the largest off-grid solar initiatives in history, ultimately illuminating the lives of millions through rooftop solar home systems. In this episode, I delve into the transformative impact of the Solar Home Systems Program, which transcended the mere provision of light. Families found themselves able to extend their working hours, children engaged in study after sunset, small businesses thrived later into the evening, and communities experienced a newfound autonomy over their energy resources.
