One Smelly Amoeba

Amoeba proteus releases a chemical signal known as the A-factor that alerts nearby organisms to its presence. Researchers discovered that the signal also helps the amoebas recognize their own clones and avoid consuming them. The scent balances predator success with protection against cannibalism.
