One Thing
from The Truth Church
Pastor Hilton preached from Luke 10:38-42 on the contrast between Martha and Mary. He explained that Martha was 'cumbered'—meaning distracted, over-occupied, and anxious about many things. Jesus did not condemn her work quality, but its quantity. The one thing needful, which Mary chose, was sitting at Jesus' feet. The sermon argued that believers often allow legitimate responsibilities—work, family, church duties—to crowd out the essential posture of worship and dependence on God. Pastor Hilton warned against substituting activity for intimacy, noting that outward religious actions can mask a heart that has lost its first love. He illustrated this by examining Mary's devotion: she was familiar with Jesus' feet, willing to pour out her most precious possession (the spikenard) regardless of cost or criticism. He contrasted this with Ananias and Sapphira, whose giving was motivated by a desire for recognition rather than genuine love. The pastor emphasized that true worship is a choice, not a feeling—a decision to stop striving and simply be present with Jesus. He concluded that nothing—not money, problem-solving, or busyness—can produce lasting peace and joy except finding one's place at Jesus' feet and trusting Him completely. The spiritual purpose was to call the congregation back to this essential, non-negotiable priority in the midst of life's pressures.
