Ontario Byelections Show No Major Shift | Calgary News

Ontario’s recent byelections delivered a familiar political script: no major shifts at Queen’s Park as PCs and NDP held their ground. Jeff Beattie won Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, Susan Lahey retained York–Simcoe, and Fatima Shaban narrowly edged out the Liberals in Scarborough Southwest — all amid record-low turnout. Premier Ford credited the results to his stance on U.S. tariffs and job protection, while Shaban vowed to tackle affordability. NDP leader Marit Stiles seized the moment, positioning her party as Ford’s challenger. Analysts suggest economic anxiety over trade tensions may have bolstered Ford’s support — but ultimately, the established power balance remains intact.
