Siendo una de las óperas tradicionales de la provincia de Sichuan, la Ópera de Sichuan, o sea Chuanxi, se formó durante el reinado del emperador Qianlong de la dinastía Qing y se popularizó en la provincia de Sichuan, la ciudad de Chongqing y parte de las provincias de Yunnan, Guizhou y Hubei.
