Operation Dingo: The Raid That Nearly Won the War? (Pt. 2)

Operation Dingo was one of the most ambitious and audacious cross-border operations of the Rhodesian Bush War. In this episode of Dead Warrior Society, we continue the story of Operation Dingo as nearly 200 Rhodesian soldiers and airmen launch a massive airborne assault against ZANLA’s Chimoio complex in Mozambique.The operation had been months in the making. Rhodesian SAS and RLI paratroopers would be supported by virtually the entire Rhodesian Air Force, including Alouette III helicopters, Hawker Hunters, Vampires, Canberras, and Dakota transports. The plan was an extraordinary exercise in timing: strike the ZANLA headquarters and anti-aircraft positions, parachute SAS troops around the target, insert RLI commandos by helicopter, and use K-Cars to seal the final side of the encirclement. Facing them was a vastly larger force of ZANLA guerrillas, supported by sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons and the potential intervention of FRELIMO and other forces in the area.What followed was a brutal and chaotic battle. The initial air strikes caught the ZANLA forces largely by surprise, but the Rhodesians soon discovered that the camp’s anti-aircraft defenses were more extensive than expected. Paratroopers landed under fire, commandos fought their way through trenches and fortified positions, and Rhodesian aircraft repeatedly returned to the battlefield despite taking hits. The operation eventually expanded from a planned rapid assault into an overnight occupation and systematic clearance of the massive Chimoio complex.And then came Phase Two: Tembue. With the Rhodesians already committed deep inside Mozambique, the assault force launched another airborne attack against a second major ZANLA installation. Together, the two raids became some of the most significant examples of Rhodesia’s strategy of taking the war beyond its borders.Operation Dingo was an extraordinary tactical victory—but did it actually have the potential to change the course of the Rhodesian War?
