OPINION: Tuchel was appointed to pass single test with England but failed Southgate's way

The entire premise of Thomas Tuchel's appointment was that he was not Gareth Southgate, and the German serial winner was recruited - with plenty of excitement - to get the Three Lions over the hurdles that have haunted them in the previous five tournaments. On Wednesday night in Atlanta, a huge opportunity to reach a World Cup final for the first time in 60 years arrived, and, unfortunately for England fans, Tuchel inexplicably went full Southgate at the worst possible moment.
